FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 2009
STYLISH GREEN FASHION FOR THE NEW ORDER
The Andean Collection’s fair trade jewelry brings chic, socially conscious fashion to the mainstream
NEW YORK, NY – The Andean Collection (AC), the newest player in eco fashion, has just arrived in New York. The AC is a fair trade jewelry company that makes its handcrafted product line with eco-friendly materials from the rainforests of South America and ensures a living wage for its artisans. Designer Amanda Judge founded The AC in September 2008 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The jewelry is sold in high-end boutiques and is available in 30 retail outlets in Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and New York. Customers can also purchase The AC jewelry online at http://www.theandeancollection.com.
Bright, colorful and fashion forward, the jewelry in The AC brings a new flair to the North American market, making great strides to bring eco-friendly, fair trade jewelry into the mainstream through smart design. The collection introduces materials rarely seen in the U.S. jewelry market, but used for centuries in traditional Andean jewelry making. These include açaí, whose berries have gained recent popularity for their high antioxidant properties; pambil, a palm essential to the Quichua culture of Ecuador; and huayruro, a naturally red seed used by Peruvians for generations to attract good fortune. The seeds are a durable, sustainable, and natural alternative to the synthetic beads usually seen in contemporary jewelry.
Given the current economic downturn, consumers are seeking chic, fun and affordable options. With its accessible price point, retailing between $18 and $98, the jewelry of The AC fills this need while meeting increasing consumer desire to purchase products that are good for the earth and for the community.
Consumers are not the only ones who benefit from The AC. The fair trade practices of The AC have significantly enhanced the lives of its indigenous artisans, including Olga Lucia Moran. Prior to making jewelry for The AC, Moran made her living by selling grain at the local market, where she made so little that she and her husband would often forgo meals to feed their three children. Based on just two jewelry orders, Olga was able to build an extra room in her two-room clay brick house and purchase a washing machine, after hand washing clothes for 26 years.

About Amanda Judge, Founder and Owner of The Andean Collection
Amanda Judge holds an M.A. in International Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School at Tufts University where she studied survival strategies for women in extreme poverty. Her research on this topic led her to the indigenous artisans of northern Ecuador who created jewelry from rainforest seeds. In order to introduce their beautiful and unique jewelry designs to the U.S. market and increase the standard of living for the artisans, Judge created The Andean Collection in September 2008. She currently resides in Manhattan’s East Village.
